Carrick-on-Suir honours the Clancy Brothers

Writer's picture: Dermot Keyes Dermot Keyes

Kicking off last night and running over the Bank Holiday weekend, Carrick-on-Suir will honour the rich and enduirng legacy of the Clancy Brothers, with a fulsome and deserved nod to their fellow troubadour, Tommy Makem.

The group's performing pomp in Carnegie Hall, the White Horse Tavern and in great theatres and watering holes the world over predated my birth but anyone born within Carrick's environs had an awareness of them, without necessarily fully grasping just how huge an act they were for so long.

The town the Clancys were born and bred in fittingly honours them each June and it'll be a pleasure to feature in Carrick-on-Suir Musical Society's festival concert this evening.

While doing a spot of 'housekeeping' this morning, I re-opened the coverage I assembled for The Munster Express in the wake of Liam Clancy's death in 2009 and given the festival that's now upon us, I felt it was worth re-sharing here.

Good night and joy be with you all...
